Misting fans are one of our premium outdoor cooling solutions. These fans use a misting ring with varying quantities of nozzles, depending on the size. Our misting fans and rings are all designed to be used with high pressure pumps. Mist fans come in stationary or oscillating types, mounted or portable, and various sizes from 14” to 30”. The size of the pump needed to power the mist fans will depend on the size and quantity of nozzles used and not the quantity of fans. In installations with multiple fans, any quantity of fans can be run from a single pump. We have a cattle ranch running 40 large fans with 8-nozzle rings, using a single 5 gpm pump. As a premium option, a VFD Pump can be used enabling various quantities of fans ( zones ) to be turned on and off using electronic or manual controls.
What are the advantages and uses of a misting fan vs. a perimeter misting system ? A mist fan is pushing air out, along with the mist, which is increasing the evaporation rate of the mist particles. It is this evaporation which creates the evaporative cooling process, hence, cooling the surrounding air. This increased cooling effect from high pressure misting fans is dramatic. The area to be cooled can be focused using misting fans and does not require an overhead structure.
What are the disadvantages of using Misting fans vs. a perimeter misting system? In general, mist fan installations will be more expensive. This is since a high-pressure misting pump is necessary in addition to the cost of the fans. Another consideration will be bringing power and high-pressure mist lines to each fan.
For applications where portability is required, we have various options. Our Cool Caddie Portable Misting fan is a commercial grade self-contained unit featuring a 15 gallon water tank and integrated high pressure pump. It can also be hooked up to a garden hose for continuous filling of the tank. A shut off valve inside will keep the tank from over filling. These are available in 18” and 24” models. As with other misting products, mist fans are available elsewhere in low and mid pressure versions. The type in which the misting ring is directly hooked up to a garden hose is considered low pressure. The other type of misting fan would use a mid-pressure ( around 200 psi ) pump. Both types of mist fans will offer cooling, but the effect of high pressure misting nozzles will produce cooling that is dramatically more pronounced.
