Misting Pumps

The term “ High Pressure Misting Pump “ generally refers to a pump which produces 1000 psi (Pounds per square inch) of pressure.  This contrasts with low and mid pressure pumps which produce 200 psi at the most.  In the world of misting pumps, a 1000 psi misting pump is at the top of the heap. Here at Smart Mist USA, high pressure misting pumps are all that we sell. While low and mid pressure pumps can offer some cooling effect, it comes at the expense of wetting. The mist particles from these pumps are too big to evaporate completely before they reach people and furniture.  The result is an undesirable wetness that leaves people uncomfortable and dissatisfied with their purchase.

A high pressure misting pump is built differently than low and mid pressure pumps. These lower pressure pumps are typically diaphragm type pumps. 1000 psi mist pumps are typically 3 piston pumps. Think of a car engine which also uses pistons. The piston design allows the pump to achieve much higher pressure.  

High pressure mist pumps are at the heart of any misting system. This can include perimeter misting systems, misting fan systems, and fogging systems.  The basic principle of these pumps is quite simple. The water input is typically sourced from a standard water spigot or similar. The output of the pump then supplies the high pressure water through specially designed high pressure tubing until it gets to the misting nozzles of the system.

The quality of the water that is supplying the pump is critical to the operation of the system. Many parts of the country have poor water quality in the form of hard water and calcium. Hard water deposits will create two problems: Clogged nozzles and potential catastrophic pump damage. If your area has hard water, then proper filtration is necessary. Sediment and scale filtration are both important for the health of your pump. Calcium (scale) will gradually build up inside of the pump and eventually cause the pump to fail.  Our commercial line of 1000 psi misting pumps is best suited for applications in which continuous usage is needed, and an ultra-dependable workhorse is desired. Examples include restaurants, bars, theme parks, cattle and horse industries, and high end residential. The commercial pumps come in three types: Direct Drive, Pully Drive, and VFD (Variable Frequency Drive ). A direct drive is the least expensive but still is a very robust pump. It is the loudest of all the commercial pumps so they should typically be used when the sound level is not of high concern. However, if they are put into a room or further away from the misting location, the noise level can be mitigated. A pulley Drive Pump uses a pully and belt to transfer the power from the motor to the pump. This results in the pump spinning at lower rpms and therefore much quieter.  In addition, since the pump is turning slower, it translates into longer life. Installations with pulley drive pumps do not need to have as great of a concern about noise level as  direct drive pumps. The top of the line and most advanced commercial pump is the VFD (Variable Frequency Drive). With this pump you can have various zones that can be turned on individually or all at once. The zones can be activated manually or electronically. The pump will sense the demand of the nozzle count and speed up or slow down accordingly. These pumps are incredibly versatile in addition to being extremely quiet.
